Bengaluru’s Heat Just Betrayed Your Teeth Betrayed

Understanding tooth sensitivity — why it happens, what it means for your oral health, and when to seek professional care.

Summer in Bengaluru means cold co,ee, ice cream, and chilled beverages  but for millions of Indians, every sip and bite comes with an unwelcome sting. You are not alone, and this is not something you simply have to live with.

What Exactly Is Tooth Sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity is that sudden, sharp pain you feel when something cold  or sometimes hot, sweet, or sour touches your teeth. It comes on fast and fades just as quickly, usually within a few seconds. Many people brush it off as normal, but it rarely is. It is your tooth’s way of telling you that its protective outer layer has been compromised. The pain is a signal  not just an inconvenience and the sooner it is addressed, the simpler the treatment

Why Does Summer Make It Worse?

The seasonal spike in sensitivity complaints is real, and there are several reasons for it. During summer, we naturally consume more cold and acidic foods chilled drinks, sodas, lime juice, ice creams, cold curd  all of which can exacerbate existing sensitivity or actively contribute to enamel erosion over time. Additionally, dehydration is common in Bengaluru’s warm months. Reduced saliva production due to dehydration means less natural buffering capacity in your mouth. Saliva plays a protective role by neutralising acids and remineralising enamel. When it is reduced, your teeth are more vulnerable. Finally, many people turn to whitening toothpastes or over-the-counter remedies in preparation for summer social events, some of which can temporarily increase sensitivity if used incorrectly.

The Common Causes Behind Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity rarely happens without a reason. Here are the most frequently encountered causes we diagnose at our dental department:

  • Enamel Erosion

Frequent consumption of acidic foods and beverages soft drinks, citrus fruits, tamarind gradually dissolves enamel, exposing the sensitive dentine beneath.

  • Gingival Recession

Receding gums expose the tooth’s root surface, which has no enamel coverage. The cementum layer on roots wears away easily, leading to sharp cold sensitivity.

  • Aggressive Brushing

Brushing too hard or using a stiff bristled brush causes enamel abrasion and gum recession simultaneously  one of the most preventable causes of sensitivity.

  • Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

Nocturnal grinding and clenching gradually flattens and wears down enamel, particularly on the biting surfaces of molars and premolars.

  • Dental Procedures

Teeth whitening, scaling, and restorations can temporarily increase sensitivity. This usually resolves within a few weeks but should be monitored.

  • Cracked Teeth or Fillings

Hairline cracks  often invisible to the naked eye allow thermal stimuli to reach the dentinal tubules and pulp   far more efficiently, causing acute sensitivity.

  • Tooth Decay (Caries)

Active cavities destroy enamel  and expose dentine. Cold sensitivity is often one of the earliest symptoms of dental  decay that patients notice in daily life.

  • Periodontal Disease

Chronic gum disease causes bone and tissue loss around the tooth, leading to root exposure and widespread sensitivity across multiple teeth simultaneously

What Can You Do at Home?

Prevention  The Most Powerful Tool You Have

The best outcome in dentistry is always the one where treatment is never needed. Tooth sensitivity, in a large proportion of cases, is entirely preventable with consistent oral hygiene habits, dietary awareness, and regular professional check-ups  ideally every six months.

We understand that in a busy city like Bengaluru, dental visits oSen get postponed until the pain becomes unbearable. But consider this: a small area of early enamel erosion caught at a routine check up is treated in minutes with a fluoride varnish and dietary counselling. The same tooth, leS untreated for two years, may develop deep caries requiring a root canal and crown a significantly longer, more complex, and more expensive treatment.

Invest thirty minutes twice a year in a professional check-up. It is one of the most cost-effective health decisions you can make for yourself and your family

“A tooth that sends you a pain signal is asking for help. Listen early, and the solution is almost always simple. Ignore it long enough, and simple becomes complicated.”
