Gestational diabetes

What is Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational diabetes is high blood sugar that develops during pregnancy.

Why it happens?

It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to overcome the hormonal changes of pregnancy. During the second and third trimesters, the placenta produces hormones that cause insulin resistance.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Most women experience no obvious symptoms, making routine screening vital. When symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Extreme thirst (polydipsia).
  • Frequent urination (polyuria).
  • Unusual fatigue.

Diagnosis typically happens between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy through a glucose challenge or tolerance test.

Management Strategies

  • The goal is to keep blood sugar within target ranges: Fasting ≤ 95 mg/dL and 2-hour post-meal ≤ 120 mg/dL.
  • Smart Eating: Focus on fiber-rich, low-glycemic index (GI) foods like whole grains, lean proteins, and non-starchy vegetables. Using the Diabetes Plate Method can help balance portions
  • Regular Movement: Gentle activities like a 15–20 minute walk after meals can significantly improve how your body uses insulin.
  • Monitoring: Checking blood sugar levels daily (typically 4–6 times) helps track how different foods affect you.
  • Medication: If lifestyle changes aren’t enough, doctors may prescribe tablets or Insulin based on blood sugar level

Potential Risks if Unmanaged

Uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to:

  • Macrosomia: A baby growing larger than average, which may increase the likelihood of a Cesarean section.
  • Newborn Hypoglycemia: Low blood sugar in the baby immediately after birth.
  • Long-term Health: An increased risk of Type 2 diabetes for both mother and child later in life.
  • Intrauterine fetal death-–Though rare but serious risk possible

Post-Pregnancy Care

Blood sugar usually returns to normal shortly after delivery. However, it is essential to get a follow-up test 6–12 weeks postpartum and continue regular screenings every 1–3 years thereafter.
