You think it\u2019s nothing serious\u2026 But within hours, the skin becomes swollen, extremely painful, and starts changing color.\u00a0What if I tell you that this could be a life-threatening infection called Gas Gangrene?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Gas Gangrene?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gas gangrene is a severe infection in which certain bacteria rapidly destroy muscles and\u00a0 tissues.\u00a0These bacteria can produce gas inside the tissues\u2014that&#8217;s where the name &#8220;gas gangrene&#8221; comes from.\u00a0And the scary part is it can progress extremely quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What should you look out for?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Warning signs can include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Severe pain, sometimes much worse than the wound looks\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rapidly increasing swelling\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Skin becoming pale, reddish, purple, or black\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blisters or foul-smelling discharge\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever and weakness\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A crackling or \u2018bubble-wrap\u2019 feeling under the skin due to gas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But remember, you should never wait for all these symptoms to appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who is at risk?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It can occur after contaminated or deep wounds, especially when there is damaged or dead tissue.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People with conditions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/prakriyahospitals.com\/speciality\/diabetology-and-endocrinology.html\">diabetes<\/a>, poor blood circulation, or a weakened immune system may also be at higher risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why<strong> is it an emergency?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gas gangrene can spread rapidly from the local tissue to the whole body and can lead to sepsis, shock, organ failure, and death.\u00a0That\u2019s why this is <strong>NOT <\/strong>an infection to treat at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What happens in the emergency department?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment needs to start immediately.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The patient may need:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Urgent assessment and investigations\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Powerful intravenous antibiotics\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergency surgery to remove dead and infected tissue\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Intensive supportive treatment if there is sepsis or shock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, despite aggressive treatment, removal of the affected limb may be necessary to save the patient\u2019s life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Take-home message<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So remember:\u00a0A wound that is becoming rapidly more painful, swollen, discolored, or associated with fever or severe weakness needs urgent medical attention. Don\u2019t wait for the wound to turn black.
