Kidney stones are hard, crystal-like deposits that form when your urine has too much of certain minerals and salts, and not enough fluid to dilute them. They start tiny like a grain of sand, but can grow to the size of a golf ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main Types:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. Calcium oxalate \u2013 80% of stones. Forms when calcium combines with oxalate in urine<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Uric acid \u2013 Common in people who eat lots of red meat, have gout, or are dehydrated<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Struvite \u2013 Linked to UTIs. Can grow fast and become \u201cstaghorn\u201d stones<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Cystine \u2013 Rare, runs in families due to genetic disorder<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Why Do You Get Them? The Risk Factors<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don\u2019t need bad luck \u2013 just the wrong mix of habits + biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biggest triggers:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

– Dehydration: 1 cause. Less water = concentrated urine = crystals stick together<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Diet: Too much salt, animal protein, sugar, oxalate-rich foods like spinach, nuts, chocolate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Medical conditions: Hyperparathyroidism, gout, obesity, IBD, recurrent UTIs<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Family history: If your dad had stones, your risk doubles<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Medications: Diuretics, calcium antacids, some seizure meds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Geography: Hot climates = more sweating = higher risk. Welcome to \u201cStone Belt\u201d states<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Symptoms: How Do You Know?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Small stones may pass silently. Big ones announce themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Severe flank pain \u2013 Starts in back\/side, radiates to groin. Comes in waves. Often called \u201cworse than childbirth\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it\u2019s an emergency:<\/strong> Fever, unable to pass urine, vomiting so you can\u2019t keep fluids down, or only 1 kidney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Diagnosis: Finding the Stone<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

1. CT scan \u2013 Gold standard. Finds 99% of stones, size, location<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Ultrasound \u2013 No radiation. Good for pregnant women, kids<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. X-ray KUB \u2013 Misses 40% of stones but cheap<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Urine test \u2013 Checks for blood, infection, crystal types<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Blood test \u2013 Calcium, uric acid, kidney function<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Stone analysis \u2013 If you pass it, save it. Tells us how to prevent next one<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Treatment: From \u201cDrink Water\u201d to Surgery<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Depends on size + location + symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For stones <5mm:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

– 90% pass on their own in 1-3 weeks<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– MET: Medical Expulsive Therapy \u2013 Tamsulosin relaxes ureter<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Pain control: NSAIDs like diclofenac work better than opioids<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Hydration: 3-4L water\/day. Goal = pee light yellow<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For stones 5-10mm: 50\/50 chance. Try MET for 4-6 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For stones >10mm or stuck:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. ESWL: Shock Wave Lithotripsy \u2013 Sound waves break stone. Non-invasive<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Ureteroscopy: Thin scope + laser through bladder. No cuts. 1-day surgery<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. PCNL: Keyhole surgery through back for large\/staghorn stones<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. RIRS: Flexible scope + laser for kidney stones up to 2cm<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Prevention: Stop the Next One<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

50% of people get another stone in 5-10 years unless they change habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 5 Rules:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

1. Fluids, fluids, fluids: 2.5-3L urine\/day. That\u2019s \u223c3L water. Check pee color<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Cut sodium: <2,300mg\/day. Salt makes you pee calcium<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Moderate protein: Too much meat = uric acid stones. Think palm-size portion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Get dietary calcium: 1000mg\/day from food. Paradox: Low calcium diet = MORE stones. Don\u2019t take supplements unless prescribed<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Limit oxalate if you\u2019re a former stone maker: Spinach, beets, nuts, tea, chocolate. Pair with calcium foods to bind oxalate<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lemonade hack: Citrate in lemons stops stones. 4oz lemon juice in 2L water daily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Myths vs Facts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Myth<\/strong>: Milk causes stones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact: <\/strong>Dietary calcium actually prevents calcium oxalate stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
